today i learned that the finnish word for ‘hazardous waste’ is ongelmajäte, which can also translate as ‘problematic garbage’ and my roommate and i immediately agreed this is a word that belongs on tumblr.

Your fave is ongelmajäte

in german it’s Sondermüll which means special trash and that too belongs on tumblr

The premise: Edgar Allan Poe’s famous short story “The Cask of Amontillado” is about a man named Montresor who tricks his frenemy Fortunado into following him deep into the catacombs below his mansion, promising that is totally where he stores rare Amontillado wine. Monstresor chains Fortunado in a tiny chamber and walls him in, leaving him to die. Cold, right?

“The Cask of Amontillado” is widely considered to be Poe’s most perfect short story. The whole thing is less than fives pages long. Most people are required to read it in high school. If you haven’t read it before (or you need to reread it), you can read it HERE or HERE.

ORRRRRR you could watch an entertaining video recap HERE or HERE.

So, why’s it such a popular meme?

1) It is based on an old-but-famous short story, providing participants with a smug satisfaction at having read something intellectual and classic, BUT it’s well-known enough that people can share knowing chuckles over the reference. Because it’s no fun making a clever allusion if nobody gets the joke.

2) It becomes funnier if some people don’t get it. Because in the story, Fortunado didn’t get it, either. This creates opportunities for “just go back a little further” or “come to my basement and I’ll show you” jokes.

3) It’s easy to adapt into existing memes and pop culture references. For example:

Caveman Spongebob

Brick wall Spongebob

Thomas the Tank Engine

Hand-clap callout

Me, an intellectual AND also another Me, an intellectual!

cute animals

I know the meme hivemind can adapt pretty much anything, but you’d think a Gothic short story written in the 1800s would be more of a challenge.

4) Fortunado is dressed as a jester for a costume party. That’s right: the story is about murdering a clown. People like the concept of turning the tables on those clowns.

5) Trump won’t shut up about building walls. Imagining that Cheeto-faced clown getting walled up appeals to a certain poetic justice. (Hahaha, Poe-etic!)

6) It’s October, and many teachers (like me!) are busting out the Poe stories. Many Tumblr users are high school students (though some of us Tumblrites, I will remind you, are Old Peeps).

7) The entire story is teeming with dramatic irony. We, the readers, know that Montresor is planning to stone-cold murder Fortunado. But Fortunado thinks he’s just going to get some fancy wine from his friend who is totally not mad at him. Fortunado’s name even means “lucky,” which is darkly hilarious. And kids today LOVE enjoying things ironically, and enjoying irony itself. Also, Poe would probably find these memes delightfully ironic.

Like tbqh most of the discourse on this hellsite sounds like this to me:

1) This character stole some bread, they are the literal worst and if you like them you are personally endorsing stealing and are the literal worst.

2) This character stole some bread from my favourite character and DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE REDEEMED

3) This person drew art of this character stealing a loaf of bread and is romanticizing the act of stealing and is making fandom toxic.

4) This person wrote Problematic TM fic in which this character steals MORE LOAVES OF BREAD AND ISNT PUNISHED FOR IT how dare they.

5) I’m trying to make fandom a non toxic space for all of us so here’s a list of all the bloggers and artists who have created art which did not directly punish this character for stealing bread and on occasion have drawn them going on to steal more bread. Please don’t harass them =uwu=

6) How dare you even think of writing a redemption story for this character who once stole bread.

PSA: known bread theft supporter tumblr user 24601 is now posting under the name medeleine. Their old blog has been deleted. Message me for receipts.

Anyone who sees fic/art of fictional characters stealing bread will start stealing bread too.

If you post fic/art of characters stealing bread, you’re directly responsible for all bread-stealing that ever happened.

Even if Aladdin is a canon bread thief, do NOT make fic/art of Aladdin stealing bread!

YOU ARE EXPOSING MINORS TO DEPICTIONS OF CRIMINAL ACTS. YOU ARE AN ABUSER.

* You’re allowed to make fic/art of fictional characters stealing bread IF someone once stole a bread from you AND you make a public post telling everyone the size of your loaf. BREAD ROLLS DON’T COUNT, IT MUST BE A WHOLE LOAF OR YOU’RE JUST FAKING.

how to radically improve ur experience on tumblr.com:

mercilessly block all Fuckers. do not reply to them, do not “justify” blocking them. the goal is to get them out of ur life, not “win” a conflict

unfollow anyone who isnt actively improving ur quality of life. u dont owe the people u follow ur attention. if they arent producing content/posts that your benefit from in some way, u dont have to stick around. its not personal.

u dont have to care at maximum capacity about everything. ppl like to signal boost and spread awareness and thats great, but its ok to just not have the energy to do that. u dont have to feel guilty about using ur blog for YOUR purposes. thats what its for

if u need to, turn anon off. theres no shame in that. it works.

if someone is raising a concern with you or reacting critically to something youve said or done, listen to them with empathy rather than getting angry. not everyone is trying to start a fight when they call u out on doing something hurtful, and if u react angrily on a knee-jerk reaction to someone who was just trying to help, ur gonna look like an asshat

if u feel like ur about to look like an asshat, its advisable to get up and do something else for a while until youve cooled down and can think rationally. u dont have to reply right away

“tone” is pretty subjective, so try not to fight with people over it

u dont have to fight with every motherfucker who says some ignorant or passive aggressive shit on ur posts. just block them. they can be wrong all by themselves.

just block them

abuse the block function

it is there for u to use it
