Still almost 2000 words behind where I should be, because today I wrote ~2400 words (somehow - I have no idea where they came from) but the last two days I’ve averaged under 1k. Good enough; I can catch up gradually, and I spent part of yesterday sorting all of the scenes I have written so far. I’m nowhere close to done, but I have the shape of the thing that I’m writing now; I can see a rhythm to connect all of the scenes I have written, and I have an idea of where they are spaced relative to each other (because I write the main chronology and then a lot of things that are out of order). Yay!

Reed* is finally at a point where she’s ready to try talking about her feelings, she thinks she’s gonna be THE BEST at acknowledging the gaping abyss of sadness within her, and Viola** is like “what is a feeling don’t be silly those aren’t real” because she is a crotchety old woman who figures she’s going to die soon anyway, no point in being introspective and spending her last days crying.

(Little does she know.)

I got behind last week, but caught up yesterday evening. I skipped a couple of scenes that were bogging me down, and I’ll figure them out later, but I’m at the Exciting Personal Growth part of the story for two characters*, so that’s good. I predict that I will need another 30-40k to finish the novel completely, and then it’ll be time to start typing it up and marking where I need to expand/edit/whatnot. But that’s for December.

Trying to write while also trying to fight the ennui in my brain is not a good combination. I have a day off and I’ve wasted most of it and I’m frustrated with myself for not being able to fucking concentrate for more than two minutes at a time.

Two chapter-like sections done and 8610 words in! And only the vaguest idea of what happens in the next two chapters, but after that it becomes clearer again; I’m gonna rely on the characters getting the hell out of cities for a bit to give different characters a chance to shine.

I reread part of what I wrote my senior year to remind myself of a detail and came across some inadvertently good characterization, i.e. Tanwen making tangentially related things into slights on her honor and projecting her trauma onto someone who isn’t even from the same world as her, let alone involved in her original problems… which I think might have originally just been for exposition reasons, but she’s also sixteen and a literal social justice warrior who takes herself Very Seriously so looking back it feels quite in-character for her to be reactionary in ways that are legit, but also vaguely embarrassing and don’t make her look good.

I’m writing about the collapse of the multiverse and people sort of falling from empty world to empty world without any warning or real predictability and I just realize HOW MUCH separation anxiety these characters are gonna feel about each other for … a while. Until the last two chapters. On top of processing losing their home planets.

The story isn’t *quite* as much of a Trauma Conga Line as it sounds, I swear, but I am gonna have to deal with that in an emotionally realistic way, so, that’ll be fun.

I’m probably going l babble about my novel this month to keep myself energized; I’ll tag it all as ‘adventures in nanoing’ for your blacklisting pleasure.
